Gordijn van kletterend water
Vanuit Kasane (Botswana) rijden elke dag tientallen minibusjes op en neer naar Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Ook wij hebben hier gebruik van gemaakt tijdens onze rondreis door Botswana. Een super oplossing als je minder gedoe wil hebben met alle papieren die je moet invullen bij het passeren van de grens en het aanvragen van visa. Het is al een heel spektakel als je alleen als persoon de grens oversteekt, met een eigen auto schijnt het nog veel meer gedoe te zijn. Dat is voor een dagje de moeite niet waard. Maar ook met een georganiseerde rit is een ding zeker: je paspoort heeft weer een groot aantal stempels erbij!
Na een prachtige rit van ongeveer twee uur kwamen we aan in het stadje Victoria Falls, dat op de grens van Zambia en Zimbabwe ligt. De Victoria Falls vormen een van ’s werelds natuurwonderen. En ondanks het feit dat het waterpeil een all time low had bereikt tijdens ons bezoek(december 2019), blijft het een indrukwekkend gebeuren! Een gebied van meer dan 1.700 meter breedte met vele watervallen waar zo’n 500 miljoen liter water over de rotswand valt per minuut als de rivier op volle sterkte stroomt.
Er is een wandelroute uitgezet langs de enorme kloof. Via een goed begaanbaar pad loop je van het ene naar het andere uitzichtpunt. De grootsheid van de watervallen is immens. De wolken van mist zijn al van ver zichtbaar en het gedonder van het vallende water vult de lucht. En als je langs de watervallen loopt merk je dat deze mist soms bijna in een regenbui overgaat. Hierdoor zijn delen van de bossen rondom de Falls een soort tropische regenwoud. Je moet dus niet bang zijn om nat te worden!
De wandeling langs alle watervallen duurt zo’n 1,5 tot 2 uur. Bij het startpunt is een restaurant, maar langs de watervallen kun je nergens meer iets te drinken of te eten scoren. Niet verkeerd dus om genoeg water bij je te hebben, want in de hitte komt dit goed van pas! De entree bedraagt voor buitenlanders $30,- pp. De inflatie in Zimbabwe is zo groot, dat alles ter plekke wordt berekend in US dollars en de lokale munt niet meer wordt gebruikt. Betalen kun je ook in ZA Rand en B Pula.
#Ga lunchen in het Victoria Falls Hotel. Een bezoek aan dit hotel is een attractie op zich. Je waant je compleet in de oude koloniale tijd! Van af het terras heb je een prachtig uitzicht op de brug die Zimbabwe met Zambia verbindt.
