Okavango delta: grootste binnenlandse delta ter wereld
Wil je overweldigd raken door prachtige natuur en een veelvoud aan wildlife? De Okavango Delta zal je dan niet teleurstellen. Je kunt het gebied op vele manieren ontdekken. Wij hebben het vanuit de lucht en het water gedaan. Een scienic flight over de delta en via het water per mocorro. Beiden prachtig en een onvergetelijke ervaring.
Tijdens het plannen van onze reis door Botswana was de Okavanga Delta een van de natuurgebieden die bovenaan ons lijstje stonden. Het is te vinden in het noordwesten.
Het is het de grootste binnenlandse delta van de wereld welke niet in zee eindigt, maar in de Kalahari woestijn. Het water in de delta komt uit het hooggebergte van Angola. De grote regens, die doorgaans in december starten, vullen de Okavango Delta met water dat er ongeveer vier maanden over doet om de weg af te leggen en de delta gevuld is. Tussen de maanden juni en augustus bereikt het water uiteindelijk het hoogtepunt.
Wij hebben de delta in december bezocht. De droogte in de periode ervoor was extreem en het eerste water had recent de delta bereikt. Daardoor moesten we wel iets verder rijden om bijvoorbeeld de dagtrip met de mocorro te kunnen starten.
Delta vanuit de lucht
Vanuit de lucht is de weidsheid van het gebied goed te zien. Hoe verder je noordelijk in de delta komt, hoe meer water zichtbaar wordt in kleine en grotere meren en de kleine rivieren die nog(of alweer) stromen. Prachtige beelden van rondtrekkende olifanten, badende neushoorns en groepen met buffels wisselen elkaar af. We hadden een vlucht met vier personen in een klein vliegtuigje via Air Shakawe. Mijn tip is wel: neem een reistabletje! Doordat een klein vliegtuigje heel windgevoelig is, schud je een uur lang redelijk alle kanten op. Ondanks het feit dat ik groen en geel zag(geen tabletje genomen dus…), zou ik het niet hebben willen missen!!
We verbleven drie nachten bij The waterfront Guesthouse waar gastheer Patrick zorgt voor een bijzonder prettig verblijf. We hadden geen excursies vooruit geboekt in dit gebed. Onze ervaring is dat dit ook niet nodig is en je veel beter een keuze kunt maken als je advies inwint bij de localo’s. Patrick heeft zowel de vlucht als de boottrip geregeld, en hij had nog wel veel meer tips die we zouden kunnen doen als we er langer zouden zijn geweest.
Delta vanaf het water
De tocht met de mocorro was ook een hele bijzondere ervaring. Wij kozen voor de dagtrip, voor avonturiers is er ook een variant van 2 dagen met een overnachting in de bush. In een rit van 1,5 uur wordt je de delta ingereden naar een plek waar de mocorro’s en de schippers op je wachten. Per twee personen wordt je de delta in ‘geduwd’ en krijg je onderweg een indruk van alle leven in en op het water. Voorwaarde is wel dat je heel goed stil blijft zitten, anders ga je om! Best lastig als je enthousiast bent over al het moois dat langs je heen schiet.
De bootreis eindigde bij een eiland, waar we met onze gids een bushwalk gingen maken. Leuk om weer vanuit een ander perspectief bijgepraat te worden over poep, botten, diergedrag en andere zaken die bij ‘African Wildlife’ horen. Voor de lunch kregen we ’s ochtend een gevulde box mee. Nadat deze zo’n 6 uur in de brandende zon met 38 graden had gestaan, smaakte het broodje tonijn nog opmerkelijk goed. Nog opmerkelijker: we zijn er niet ziek van geworden!
#Indien je wilt kamperen, kijk dan eens bij the old bridge backpackers. Hier vandaan vertrokken we voor de boottrip naar de delta. We vonden het te heet om in Maun te kamperen, maar anders hadden we hier waarschijnlijk ook een plek geboekt. Na afloop van de boottrip hebben we hier zalig gegeten. Als je van een beetje hippiesfeer houdt, dan zit je hier goed.
#Lekker eten kun je ook bij Marc’s eatery. In een ongedwongen sfeer eet en drink je hier voor een meer dan redelijk bedrag. Eigenaar Marc is een leuke gastheer, met familie in Nederland. We hadden gelijk gespreksstof dus.
