Op rondreis door Namibië kom je in het zuiden bij het dorp Keetmanshoop. Nabij dit kleine dorp waar we hebben overnacht vindt je een uniek stukje natuur genaamd Giants Playground. Een paar minuutjes rijden vanaf dit gebied ligt het Kokerbomenwoud, dat ook zeer de moeite waard is om te bezoeken. Ze zijn in enkele uurtjes te bekijken. Goed te doen dus als je halverwege de middag in Keetmanshoop aankomt.
Deze enorme uitgestrekte vlakte is een bijzonder fenomeen. De naam Giants Playground dekt de lading: het is een wonder dat alle rotsformaties zonder hulp van reuzen kan zijn ontstaan. Het is net een mega blokkendoos in een reuze speeltuin. De wetenschap leert ons dat de Giants Playground met zijn rotsblokken van gehard lava, ontstaan is door erosie. Vanaf de parkeerplaats kun je via een pad u door Giants Playground heen lopen. Volg wel de paden, je kunt er maar zo verdwalen!
Om dit gebied te kunnen bezoeken betaal je een parkfee, welke je ook toegang biedt tot het Kokerbomenwoud (Quiver tree forest). De kokerboom is een holle boom die in Namibië en Zuid-Afrika voorkomt.
Verder in Namibië hebben we ze ook wel eens gezien, maar dan een of twee stuks. Niet in zulke grote getale zoals hier. Deze plek is bijzonder mooi en fotogeniek als de zon bijna onder gaat.
Overnachten in Keetmanshoop is niet echt bijzonder, maar is wel een handige stop met leuke activiteit op weg naar de Fishriver Canyon. Comfortabel kun je in het Quiver Inn Guesthouse overnachten. Prachtige kamers met ruime badkamers. Ontbijten en eten kun je op een steenworp afstand bij het Schuetzenhaus Guesthouse. In het dorp is ook een redelijk grote Spar en een geldautomaat.
